Covering letter Covering letter Whenever you send a CV, you should always include a covering letter.
It is not just a note to accompany your CV, but instead forms an important part of your job application. A poor covering letter may result in your CV not even being read. This will be a real shame if you've spent hours writing it. Try to address your letter to an actual, named person.
The main body of your letter should have four main paragraphs, with each paragraph performing an important role. First paragraph This should say why you are writing to the employer. Say what job you are applying for and where you saw it advertised.
Second Paragraph This is the really important one.
It is here that you get the chance to show the employer you have read the job advert and you know what is required. You also use this paragraph to outline your skills and say why they should employ YOU.
Find out what you can about the company, its products, its clients etc. Show an interest in the company, and there is more chance that they will show an interest in you.
Third Paragraph This paragraph is optional really, but you can use it to showcase any additional relevant skills you could bring to the company. What skills do you have that they haven't asked for, but which may be required later on?
Research on the company may help you with this, and may allow you to stand out from other candidates for the job.
Fourth Paragraph This should be a positive closing statement, inviting the employer to contact you should they require any further information.
State that you look forward to receiving their response. Include your phone number, even though you have already mentioned it at the top of the letter.
